Vanessa Bryant and fans’ emotional tributes
January 22 marked the 20th anniversary of Kobe Bryant’s 81-point feat against the Toronto Raptors. The landmark achieved in 2006 remains the second-highest scoring performance in NBA history.
Vanessa Bryant, the primary guardian of Kobe’s legacy, posted emotional Instagram stories featuring vivid “Mamba” photos. Fans across the globe filled social media with #Kobe81 to pay tribute to the legend.
The NBA world also celebrated the milestone, recalling that historic night with disbelief. Dwyane Wade, remembering the moment, said: “I was like, ‘no way.’ At that time I think everybody was a fan of Kobe to see this is history right here being made.”
Bryant’s own reaction to the feat still resonates today. The young Kobe, manifesting his “Mamba Mentality,” said:
“I feel pretty good. It hasn’t really sank in yet. I wanted to step up and inspire us to play a great game and it turned into something really special.”
Nike also participated in the tributes by re-releasing the “81 Points” Kobe 1 Protro sneakers, ensuring that the legacy of that cold Los Angeles night continues to inspire a new generation of athletes.
