No-Confidence Motion Against Om Birla: Speaker Om Birla will not take part in the proceedings of Lok Sabha till the decision on no-confidence motion is taken.

New Delhi. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has decided that he will not sit on the Speaker’s chair and will stay away from the proceedings of the House until the decision is taken on the no-confidence motion brought against him by the opposition. Although there is no such compulsion as per the rules, but this is Om Birla’s own decision. Earlier, Speaker Om Birla had directed the House Secretary-General to investigate the no-confidence motion notice against him and take action accordingly. The no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker is likely to be discussed on March 9, the first day of the second part of the budget session.

118 MPs from opposition parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, RJD, DMK and Left parties have signed the notice of no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker. Shortly after the Lok Sabha proceedings began on Tuesday morning, Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Mohammed Javed and Suresh Kodikunnil submitted a notice of no-confidence motion against Om Birla to the Lok Sabha Secretary General. However, Rahul Gandhi has not signed the proposal and while explaining the reason for this, Congress has said that in a parliamentary democracy, it is not considered appropriate for the Leader of Opposition to sign the proposal to remove the Speaker.

The opposition has accused Om Birla of bias. The opposition says that Om Birla does not allow any opposition MP to speak in the House, thus he wants to suppress the voice of the opposition. In the no-confidence motion notice brought against the Lok Sabha Speaker, the opposition has mentioned four major incidents. In this, apart from Rahul Gandhi being prevented from speaking during the discussion of the motion of thanks on the President’s address, suspension of eight opposition MPs from the budget session, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s objectionable remarks on former Prime Ministers, the statement of the Lok Sabha Speaker in which he had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House was also raised.
