Veer Das mentioned in Parliament: Abhishek Banerjee discussed ‘two Indias’
Veer Das discussed in Parliament
Standup comedian and actor Vir Das is in the headlines these days, but this time the reason is not his new show, but it is Parliament (Lok Sabha). Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, while discussing the Budget 2026-27, mentioned Vir Das’s controversial monologue ‘Do Bharat’, which surprised even Vir Das himself.
Abhishek Banerjee’s statement
Speaking in the House on Tuesday, Abhishek Banerjee described Vir Das’s 2021 speech as a ‘prophecy’. He said, ‘In November 2021, Vir Das talked about ‘two Indias’ on the stage of Kennedy Center. Some people laughed and some were angry, but his message was not just comedy, but a warning. It was a mirror of a country that is standing at the edge of its problems.
Veer Das’s response
Vir Das expressed his surprise by sharing a video on this speech. He said that he could not believe that he was being discussed in the Parliament. In a joking manner he said, ‘This is happening in Parliament? Don’t do that! I remember some people were angry, but who stopped to listen? Did you get a warning? No, I was warned.
He also joked that this is the perfect time to announce his world tour and said, ‘I’m leaving the country and going on a world tour.’
Veer Das’ ‘Two India’ controversy
In 2021, Vir Das presented a poem at the Kennedy Center in Washington that discussed two different aspects of India (e.g. respect for women versus increasing crimes against them). At that time, many complaints were filed against him in India and he was accused of insulting the country on the international platform.
