Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus met several international election observation delegations in view of the upcoming 13th National Elections. These elections will be held on February 12, almost two years after the rebellion in July 2024.

Subsequently, on Wednesday, a seven-member delegation of Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) led by Chairperson Rohana Hettiarachchi met Yunus at the same place. Later the same day, a four-member Voice for Justice observer team also met the Chief Advisor. The team was led by Hasnat M Hussain, convener of the Voice for Justice World Forum, who is also a consultant to the UK Ministry of Education.
Let us tell you, Bangladesh’s Principal Coordinator of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Lamia Morshed and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present in this meeting.
The importance of this election in Bangladesh is because Awami League has been banned from participating in the elections. Other parties including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat are playing lead roles on seat-sharing basis. There has been a huge change in the election environment, due to which it has become difficult to predict the result.
Let us tell you, these elections are going to be held on February 12, 2024, which will be two years after the July uprising in which former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power. Apart from this, the Constitutional Referendum and the July National Charter will also be decided on that day.
According to the press wing of the Chief Advisor, 394 international election observers and 197 foreign journalists have come to Bangladesh for these elections. Of these 394 observers, 240 are from bilateral countries, including independent observers from the European Union, while the remaining 51 are associated with various global organizations.
