ICC T20 World Cup: West Indies got victory over England after a decade, English lost by 30 runs

Mumbai11 February. West Indies registered a resounding 30-run win against England in the ICC T20 World Cup match played at the Wankhede Stadium here on Wednesday night. Interestingly, West Indies has won over the English team after a decade. The last time it won the title was by defeating England in the 2016 T20 World Cup final.

The Caribbean team scored a strong score of 196 runs for six wickets after losing the coin toss. The English team, chasing a relatively difficult target, was limited to 166 runs in 19 overs. Gudakesh Moti took three wickets for 33 runs for the winning team.

West Indies’ second consecutive win in Group C

This is West Indies’ second consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup. It is now on top in Group C with four points. In his first match he defeated Scotland. This is England’s first defeat in two matches. But in the battle of run average, it has slipped to third place, lagging behind Scotland (two points). The English team could barely win by four runs over Nepal in its first match which lasted till the last ball.

If seen, West Indies’ fielding and bowling in the match against England was top-notch. Especially the Caribbean spinners, who played an important role in winning this game. Gudakesh, Hosein and Chase bowled very well and shared six wickets between them using some grip.

score card

Earlier, Phil Salt (30 runs, 14 balls, two sixes, four fours) had made a good start with the second over of 24 runs, but Shepherd came in the powerplay and dismissed him. Jacob Bethel (33 runs, 23 balls, one six, four fours) and experienced Jos Buttler (21 runs, 14 balls, one six, two fours) also could not go far while West Indies continued to put pressure after another failure by Tom Banton (four runs).

Sam Curran (43 not out, 30 balls, two sixes, three fours) was England’s last hope, but no one supported him as West Indies also bowled brilliant yorkers from Shamar and Holder. However, West Indies’ catching was as good as their ground fielding. It is never easy to defend the score in a night match at Wankhede when dew is helping the batsmen. So this makes West Indies’ victory even more special.

Rutherford, Holder and Chase played aggressive innings

West Indies’ Player of the Match Sherfane Rutherford (76 runs, 41 balls, seven sixes, two fours) took an aggressive stance and continued to attack fiercely even after completing her fifty in 29 balls. Apart from them, Jason Holder played attractive innings of 33 runs (17 balls, four sixes, one four) and Roston Chase played attractive innings of 34 runs (29 balls, six fours), while Shimron Hetmyer scored 23 runs (two sixes, two fours) in 12 balls. Adil Rashid bowled very economically for England. He gave only 16 runs in four overs and took two wickets.
