Steven Spielberg & Bradley Cooper’s Action Movie Remake Gets Disappointing Update
The planned Bullitt remake that Steven Spielberg and Bradley Cooper were attached to may have recently gotten a disappointing update.
What’s the latest on the Bullitt remake?
According to a new report from World of Reel, the project that has been in development since 2022 is now said to be “firmly on the back burner.” The report notes that rumors had swirled that both Cooper and Spielberg had had some sort of falling out, which would come as a surprise due to their previously close nature.
However, World of Reel’s report mentions that Cooper is currently busy working on a “passion project,” which he plans to direct either this year or in 2027. Spielberg is also busy, working on the post-production of his highly anticipated alien invasion movie Disclosure Daywhich is set to release in theaters on June 12, 2026. No official word on what his next movie will be, but it seems unlikely to be Bullitt.
In February 2022, it was reported that Spielberg was directing and producing a new Bullitt movie starring Cooper. Released in 1968, Bullitt is a well-known action thriller starring Steve McQueen; however, Spielberg’s film won’t be a direct remake and is rather described as a “new idea centered on the character” of Lt. Frank Bullitt.
“Senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) is aiming to take down mob boss Pete Ross (Vic Tayback) with the help of testimony from the criminal’s hothead brother Johnny (Pat Renella), who is in protective custody in San Francisco under the watch of police lieutenant Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen),” the synopsis for the 1968 movie reads. “When a pair of mob hitmen enter the scene, Bullitt follows their trail through a maze of complications and double-crosses. This thriller includes one of the most famous car chases ever filmed.”
McQueen’s son and granddaughter, Chad and Molly, both serve as executive producers on the movie. Cooper was cast as the titular character in November 2022.
Spielberg and Cooper both previously collaborated on Maestro, which Cooper directed in 2023. The Leonard Bernstein biopic was originally going to be directed by Spielberg (prior to that, Martin Scorsese was initially going to helm the film); however, Spielberg offered the job to Cooper after watching 2018’s A Star is Born.
