TotalEnergies sold 1.7% stake in Adani Green, know
French company TotalEnergies sold its 1.7% stake in Adani Green Energy for Rs 2,778 crore. According to experts, this is part of general portfolio re-balancing and will not impact the long-term strategy.
Business: French energy company TotalEnergies has sold its 1.7 per cent stake in Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) in the October-December 2025 quarter. 2.86 crore shares were bought for Rs 2,778.09 crore through bulk transactions. After this transaction, TotalEnergies’ stake reduced from 18.99 percent to 17.25 percent.
Experts say selling only 1.7 percent stake is not a matter of concern. This is considered part of normal investment management and portfolio balancing. Investors do not need to panic about this transaction.
TotalEnergies also sold stake in other companies
Apart from Adani Green Energy, TotalEnergies has also sold stake in other projects. This includes sale of non-operated stake in Nigeria’s Bonga field, sale of partial stake in Malaysia’s Block SK 408, sale of 50 per cent stake in renewable energy portfolio in the US and Greece.
Analysts believe the selloff in most of TotalEnergies’ assets was greater than that of Adani Green Energy. Therefore, selling only 1.7 percent stake cannot be considered a sign of any danger.
Share price and bulk deal details
According to data available in the stock market, TotalEnergies Renewables Indian Ocean sold 2.86 crore Adani Green shares for Rs 2,778.09 crore to 17 investors through bulk transaction on December 10, 2025. In this deal, the price of each share was fixed at Rs 970.
After this sale, the total stake of TotalEnergies came down to 17.25 percent. TotalEnergies holds its stake in Adani Green through two subsidiaries – TotalEnergies Solar Wind Indian Ocean Limited and TotalEnergies Renewables Indian Ocean Limited.
Why was the stake sold?
The company has not clearly mentioned the reasons for selling stake in Adani Green. Experts believe the move could be part of general portfolio re-balancing. TotalEnergies has entered into such bulk deals to balance its global investments and energy projects.
According to analysts, the sale of 1.7 per cent stake is a minor change for the company and will not have any serious impact on Adani Green’s long-term strategy or performance.
TotalEnergies’ India Renewable Energy Strategy
TotalEnergies had acquired a minority stake in Adani Green in January 2021. As part of its strategy to expand in India’s renewable energy sector, the company had also taken 50 per cent stake in three joint ventures – AREL23 (2020), AREL9 (2023) and AREL64 (2024).
Experts believe that TotalEnergies’ investment in India is important for the long term and selling only 1.7 per cent stake will not have any negative impact on Indian energy projects.
