Farewell to 80 years of history: Last cabinet meeting in South Block today, ‘Seva Teerth’ PMO will have a new address
Last Cabinet Meeting South Block: The historic South Block, which has decided the policy and destiny of the country since independence, will witness an emotional farewell on Friday. The last cabinet meeting will be held here under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 4 pm, after which the PMO will visit the modern complex of Central Vista ‘Seva Teerth’ Will be transferred to.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is bidding its historic farewell to South Block, which was the center of Indian politics for nearly 80 years. According to government sources, the cabinet meeting to be held this Friday (February 13) will be very special and symbolic. This meeting is being organized to show respect and gratitude to this historic building from where the Government of India has operated for decades.
South Block witnesses the first cabinet meeting
The history of South Block is linked with the birth of independent India. According to the information, the first cabinet meeting in this building was held on 15 August 1947 under the chairmanship of the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Now, after almost 80 years, this last meeting to be held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter.
‘Seva Tirtha-1’ built at a cost of Rs 1,189 crore;
The Prime Minister’s Office will now be housed in the newly constructed complex ‘Seva Tirtha’ under the Central Vista Redevelopment Project. Will shift in. Developed at a cost of about Rs 1,189 crore, this complex is spread over a vast area of 2,26,203 square feet. It has been constructed by the leading infrastructure company Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
This modern campus consists of three main buildings:
- Seva Teerth-1: This will be the main headquarters of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
- Seva Teerth-2: The Cabinet Secretariat will operate here, which has been shifted here in September itself.
- Seva Teerth-3: This will be the new home of the National Security Advisor (NSA) and the National Security Council Secretariat.
Modern facilities will reduce traffic problems
This new office built near Vijay Chowk is equipped with modern facilities. Although Cabinet meetings have often been held at the Prime Minister’s residence (7 Lok Kalyan Marg), but the new ‘Seva Teerth’ A cabinet hall has been specially designed in the campus.
A new Prime Minister’s residence is also being built near this complex, which is very close to the Parliament House. One of the main objectives of this entire shifting is to facilitate the movement of the Prime Minister and to reduce the traffic related problems faced by the general public during his commute.
North and South Block will become museums
There is a big plan to secure the South Block and the adjacent North Block after the Prime Minister’s Office becomes vacant. Both these historical buildings are known as ‘Yuge Yugin Bharat Museum’ It will be converted into a grand public museum.

The work of building a museum in North Block has already been started. The purpose of this change is that the coming generations can closely see and feel the administrative heritage and history of India.
