In fact, according to traffic rules, driving with slippers is not punishable. Whether the driver drives with shoes or slippers, there is no such rule in the Motor Vehicles Act on the basis of which a challan can be issued.

In September 2019, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari’s office clarified on social media that driving while wearing slippers is not a punishable offence. The same has been confirmed in the updated rules. So legally it is not wrong to wear slippers and drive. However, in terms of safety, experts always advise using proper footwear.

Boots offer better grip, stability and control on the pedals than sandals or sandals. The risk of slipping is reduced, especially if there is a sudden need to brake or accelerate. Wearing the right shoes allows for constant and precise pressure on the pedals, resulting in better vehicle control. Conversely, the shoe can easily slip, snag, or slip, which can delay response and increase the risk of an accident. So the shoe can be less reliable in unexpected road conditions.

Wearing sturdy and well-fitting shoes makes driving safer, reduces the chance of distraction and allows the driver to drive with more confidence.
