UP government begins process to build new Vidhan Sabha, allocates Rs 100 crore in Budget

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has initiated the plan to build a new Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) building in Lucknow. This year’s state budget allocates Rs 100 crore for the construction of this new building. The project is reportedly coming up on the Sahara Sahar land located in Vipul Khand, Gomtinagar area of the state capital, Lucknow.

Technical and strategic preparations underway

According to reports, the new Legislative Assembly building is planned on the land which has been taken back from the Sahara Group. The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has started the process to appoint a consultant for the project.

The land selected for the project was originally owned by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) and the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA). It had been leased to the Sahara Group. However later, after several legal battles, the state government took possession of the land and now this new project is proposed to be built here.

The LDA has in fact already acquired 75 acres land in Sahara City. The Municipal Corporation on the other hand had acquired 170 acres of land in this area. Now however, the entire land is under the state government’s control.

Land for new Vidhan Sabha building strategically located

According to reports, the land is considered to be strategically located and has better connectivity. The land measurement report has already been sent to the government.

The consultant, who will be appointed soon, will decide the DPR and design of the building. The new building is expected to have higher capacity and will also function on paperless e-Assembly model.

The current Vidhan Sabha building in the state is almost a century old. It is also not feasible, with an increasing number of legislators, more security requirements and calls to go digital. This demand for a new legislator building has been pending for years now. The government is now planning to build a new Vidhan Sabha building, which has a higher capacity than this one and which works on a paperless model.
