Know the special things related to the national song ‘Vande Mataram’

India’s national song ‘Vande Mataram’ has completed 150 years. ‘Vande Mataram’ was written by the great litterateur Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay on 7 November 1875 on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Navami. It was first published in the literary magazine ‘Bangadarshan’ in 1875. Later, in 1882, Bankim Chandra included it in his famous novel ‘Anandmath’. It was first sung on a political stage by Rabindranath Tagore at the 1896 Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress.

It first emerged as a political slogan on 7 August 1905 in protest against the partition of Bengal during the Swadeshi movement of 1905. About 40,000 people sang it together in Calcutta Town Hall. The British government at that time was so afraid of the impact of this song that they banned its public singing and those who sang were sentenced to imprisonment. ‘Vande Mataram’ became the most influential slogan of the Indian freedom struggle in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Currently as per government protocol, the official version of ‘Vande Mataram’ is of six verses, the total duration of which is considered to be approximately 3 minutes 10 seconds. Before this, the use of the first two verses was generally more popular. ‘Vande Mataram’, which is about to complete one hundred and fifty years, is still seen as a living memory of the Indian freedom struggle, cultural self-respect and national unity.
