Why is Garhmukteshwar Dham special? Know the story related to liberation
Garhmukteshwar temple is situated near Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh which was settled by the Garhwal kings. Garhmukteshwar is very special from religious and mythological point of view. It was known as ‘Shivballabhpur’ in ancient times. It is believed that Lord Parashuram had established the Shiva temple at this place. The biggest feature of this temple is its historical importance which extends from Tretayuga to Mahabharata period.
According to mythology, once Shiva’s followers were cursed to become ‘vampires’ for obstructing the penance of Maharishi Durvasa. To get rid of this curse, he performed rigorous worship of Lord Shiva at this place. Shiv Purana says that on the day of Kartik Purnima, his penance was successful and Mahadev freed him, after which the place was named ‘Ganmukteshwar’ and later ‘Gadhmukteshwar’.

This place also has a deep connection with the Mahabharata due to its connection with the Pandavas and King Parikshit. It is said that Yudhishthir had performed Pinda Daan here on the advice of Lord Krishna to overcome the grief of loss of his loved ones and devastation in the war.
Apart from this, King Parikshit had also turned here with the desire of salvation. Even today, a huge fair is held here from Kartik Shukla Ashtami to Purnima, where lakhs of people take a dip in the Ganga and pray for the peace of their ancestors.
Broken Shiv Linga
Nakka Well and the Mystery of the Broken Shivalinga There is an ancient stepwell in the temple complex called ‘Nakka Well’. It is said about this that Maharaj Nrig got freedom from the chameleon’s vagina here. At the same time, there is a mark on the Shivalinga installed in the temple, which is considered to be the blow of Parashurama’s axe. According to religious beliefs, after this attack, Shiva’s followers were completely liberated.

Special for devotees, today this temple is also known as ‘Jhar Khandeshwar’. Here on Ganga Dussehra, special worship is done to remove Pitra Dosh. Devotees come here from far and wide to make vows, perform Mundan Sanskar of children and perform rituals like Pind Daan. Mukti Ghat and Mahadev Temple remain open throughout the day for devotees to visit.
