Settlement.Such a case has come to light from Kaptanganj police station area of Basti district which has put the police, court and society in the dock. The daughter whose parents had to bear the brunt of defamation and lawsuit for two years on charges of murder, suddenly reached the police station alive. When Priyanka, declared ‘dead’ in the papers, stood in front of the police, everyone was stunned.
Priyanka Prajapati of Pilkhaye village was married to Sandeep on 14 May 2017. A son was also born, but there was a rift in the relationship between husband and wife. Two years ago, Priyanka came to her parents’ house with jewelery from her in-laws’ house and then suddenly went missing. Meanwhile, a sensational rumor spread in the village that Krupita, out of greed for jewellery, killed his daughter and grandson and threw their bodies in Saryu. The husband approached the court and on the orders of the court, on 4 November 2024, a case of murder and destruction of evidence was registered against father Dayaram, mother Subhavati, relatives Sanjana and Ashok Kumar Maurya. The dead bodies and the parents were declared ‘murderers’ without any evidence. The truth turned out to be quite the opposite.
Priyanka had reached Ayodhya with the intention of committing suicide, but there she met Mangal Chandra of Rajasthan. Her intention to commit suicide changed and she went to Rajasthan with him. Both started living like husband and wife. On the other hand, in the colony, his parents continued to suffer social scorn by being accused of murder. The twist in the story came when the OTP for change in Priyanka’s Aadhaar card came on husband Sandeep’s mobile.
Suspicion deepened, police swung into action and finally Priyanka was found alive in Rajasthan. The woman who had been ‘dead’ for two years walked herself to the police station. After the truth came out, the stigma of murder on the parents was removed, but the bond of relationships was completely broken. Parents are not ready to adopt him. The husband is also refusing to accompany her. Priyanka wants to live with her new partner Mangal Chandra. The son is no longer ready to accept his biological father Sandeep as his father.
This matter is not just a family dispute, but the question is, is it so easy to make someone a murderer just on the basis of rumour? For two years the innocent parents stood in the dock of society and law. Now who will restore their lost respect? In this, without investigating, the police became a victim of misunderstanding; neither Priyanka’s body was recovered nor any concrete support was found, but after filing a police case, both Priyanka’s parents had to go from jail to court. Parents refused to accept Priyanka as a girl.
