Retail inflation stood at 2.75 percent in January; Prices of garlic, onion, potatoes and pulses decreased!
These are the first figures of retail inflation rate after the change in base year. The base year has been changed by the government to 2024, which was earlier 2012.
Retail inflation rate in December was 1.33 percent. However, this was based on the old base year 2012.
According to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, retail inflation in rural areas stood at 2.73 percent and in urban areas it was 2.77 percent. At the same time, the food inflation rate in January was 2.13 percent. It was 1.96 percent in rural areas and 2.44 percent in urban areas.
According to the data, the price of garlic has decreased by 53.05 percent, the price of onion by 29.27 percent, the price of potato by 28.98 percent, the price of pigeon pea by 24.90 percent and the price of pea by 15.56 percent on an annual basis in January.
On the other hand, in January, prices of silver jewelery have increased by 159.67 per cent, tomato by 64.80 per cent, copra by 47.18 per cent, gold/diamond/platinum jewelery by 46.77 per cent and coconut oil by 40.44 per cent on annual basis.
According to government data, in January, on an annual basis, prices of clothes and shoes increased by 2.98 percent, prices of health services by 2.19 percent, prices of transport by 0.09 percent, prices of products like betel/tobacco by 2.86 percent; Prices of residential, water, electricity and other fuels have increased by 1.53 percent.
The five states in the country which had the highest inflation rate in January included Telangana (4.92 percent), Kerala (3.67 percent), Tamil Nadu (3.36 percent), Rajasthan (3.17 percent) and Karnataka (2.99 percent).
“The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation is releasing the Consumer Price Index (CPI) with base 2024=100. The item basket and associated weights are based on the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24,” the government said in the statement.
