Spam calls will be banned, entry of AI in new rules of TRAI

Desk. TRAI has prepared a new proposal to curb fake calls. In view of the rapidly increasing incidents of online fraud, the telecom regulator has emphasized on using AI. Fake calls coming to users’ numbers will be automatically detected through AI. Any such fake calls will be identified automatically and that SIM will be blocked without any complaint.

According to the report, the telecom regulator is going to take more strictness to curb spam calls. TRAI has given a new proposal for this. In this, suspected spam numbers will be blocked or disconnected without any complaint. According to the current rules, action is taken on a fraud number when at least 5 complaints are registered against it in 10 days.

  • TRAI is now considering changing this rule. For this, the Department of Telecommunications has sought suggestions from the industry. At present, if spam is reported against any number by telecom companies Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL for 10 days, then the service of that number is completely stopped. After the introduction of AI filter, such numbers will be blocked even without any complaint.

According to the data of the Department of Telecommunications, complaints of spam calls increased to a record 3.34 lakh in December 2025. In February 2025, the number of such complaints was only 1.16 lakh. Telecom companies keep about 30 to 40 crore calls under suspicious category every month. However, the number of complaints made by users is only 10 thousand per day. To fill this gap, TRAI has come up with a proposal for a rule to auto-detect spam calls through AI tools.

Due to this proposal of TRAI, it may create problems for scammers as well as many services. Calls made by online delivery agents can also be considered scams through AI. In such a situation, action can be taken on these important calls and SIM cards. However, TRAI is currently waiting for comments from stakeholders on this proposal. After this, a middle path can be found to avoid this problem.
