Now update name and address without sharing documents – Obnews
**Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)** launched a new **Aadhaar App** on January 28, 2026. It includes privacy-focused features like secure offline verification, selective data sharing (only essential details through QR code, like age or name without the full Aadhaar number), consent control, biometric lock/unlock, face authentication, multi-profile support (up to five family members on one device), authentication history tracking, and QR-based contact cards. This reduces reliance on photocopies for verification (e.g., hotels, workplaces), reduces the risk of misuse, and promotes data minimization under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
Key benefits include providing hassle-free identity proofing without sharing biometrics or complete details, which is especially useful for everyday needs. This app is a complement to the existing mAadhaar app and supports updates for some details.
**Mobile number update** (required for OTP and service) can now be done from the app: Log in (using Aadhaar number/OTP or face verification), go to the update section, enter the new number after authentication, pay the fee (if applicable), and track the status. This, in many cases, resolves issues with inactive/old numbers without the need for a center visit.
**Address Update** made simple: Log in, select Address Update, enter new details matching the proof, upload valid PoA documents (e.g. utility bill, passport), pay fees, submit, and track. The online portal (myAadhaar) also supports it with OTP login and document upload.
**Name Update** typically requires document proof (e.g. passport, marriage certificate) and is processed online through the myAadhaar portal or app, where available: Login, Update Demographics/Select Name, Enter Details, Upload Supporting PoI Documents, Pay Fee (₹50 for most demographic changes), Submit, and Monitor Status. There may be limits on changes to the full name or verification may be required.
Note: Although the app is very good at verification and some updates (emphasis on mobile/address at launch), the myAadhaar portal is often used with document verification for name change. One still has to go in person for biometric updates. No one completely eliminates documentation for demographic changes like a “new app” name—uploads are required. As features change, check the official UIDAI site/app for the latest steps. Download from Google Play/Apple App Store; Make sure it is from an official source.
This initiative simplifies the process for remote users, seniors and professionals, while also keeping security a priority.
