Bangladesh Election: BNP’s ‘decisive victory’ in Bangladesh elections, PM Modi congratulates Tariq Rahman
Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tariq Rahman on his “decisive victory” in the parliamentary elections, saying he looked forward to working with him to advance the common goals of development.
Modi wrote on the social media platform
Modi said, “India will continue its support for a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.” I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multi-faceted relations and advance our shared development goals.”
BNP on Friday claimed victory in the general elections held in Bangladesh. The party that wins this election will form the government in place of the interim administration. This interim administration took over the reins of the country after the Awami League regime was ousted from power in August 2024.

Earlier, BNP had announced that if it wins, it will appoint Mr Rahman, son of party president and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, as the next Prime Minister. “We are confident of forming a government by winning more than two-thirds of the seats,” said Mahdi Amin, spokesman for the BNP Central Election Steering Committee.
According to unofficial figures, BNP and its allies are leading in many seats. Jamaat-e-Islami has claimed lead or victory on about 60 seats based on internal assessment. According to the report of Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, the National Citizen Party (NCP), which emerged from the student movement, is associated with the alliance led by Jamaat. NCP said it has won six seats.
Kharge congratulates BNP, Rahman on victory
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tariq Rahman on its victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh and said that a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh will always get the support of all Indian citizens. “On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I heartily congratulate Tariq Rahman and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party on winning the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh,” Kharge posted on social media platform ‘X’.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed victory amid the counting of votes that continued on Friday after voting took place on Thursday in the general elections in Bangladesh. Many media organizations reported that BNP has won more than 151 seats in the 300-member Parliament. However, the Election Commission (EC) has not yet made any formal announcement in this regard.
