Ruckus over Yash’s film ‘Toxic’, questions raised regarding religious and obscenity
New Delhi. Yash’s pan India film ‘Toxic’ (Cemetery) has created a wave of controversies as soon as its teaser was released. Earlier the Women’s Commission had objected to the sex scene shown in this teaser, while now the ‘National Christian Federation’ (NCF) has also expressed its displeasure and lodged a complaint with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The Christian community alleges that the teaser shows a sex scene in a car outside the cemetery, and immediately after this there is a shootout inside the cemetery. The religious symbols shown during this time, especially the statue of ‘Archangel Michael’, have been depicted in a wrong manner, which has hurt their religious sentiments.
NCF demands that this teaser be immediately removed from YouTube and other digital platforms. He says that religious sentiments have been tampered with and this cannot be ignored.
Earlier, the Women’s Commission had also expressed strong displeasure over the sex scene shown in the teaser. Many people called it ‘unnecessary’ and ‘obscene’. The controversy grew so much that actress Beatriz Taufenbach, who was seen in this scene, even deleted her Instagram account. The Women’s Commission and some sections of the society say that such content ignores the sensitivity of women and should be limited or modified.
At the same time, film director Anurag Kashyap has given a statement in support of the film. She described those who protested as ‘hypocrites’ and said that society easily accepts the sexuality of male actors, but when a woman shows her sexuality, it creates controversy. He says that this exposes double mentality and questions the freedom of expression of artists.
The film ‘Toxic’ has been directed by Geetu Mohandas. Apart from Yash, big stars like Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi and Akshay Oberoi will be seen in it. The film will be released in theaters on March 19. It is going to clash with Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar’ at the box office, which has already created an environment of tough competition.
The makers of the film KVN Productions are facing legal and social opposition. Now the biggest question is whether the controversial scenes will be removed from the teaser or not. There is also a debate on social media regarding the film. On one hand, some people are considering it as a part of freedom of expression, on the other hand, the number of people who object from religious and moral point of view is also not less.
This controversy has made it clear that in big budget Pan India films, the content of the teaser or trailer is already kept a sensitive eye. This case also shows how challenging it is to strike a balance between audience reactions and cultural sentiments in the film world.
