New twist in defamation case: High Court directs MS Dhoni to deposit Rs 10 lakh

Ordered to deposit Rs 10 lakh for transcription and translation of audio-video material related to the defamation case filed against Sampathkumar. The case pertains to allegations of betting and match-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), in which Dhoni has sought damages of Rs 100 crore for linking himself to the alleged 2013 scam.
This interim order was passed on February 11 by Justice R.N. Manjula passed. The court said in its order that as per the earlier direction dated October 28, 2025, the official interpreter of the court has been entrusted with the responsibility of writing and translating the content of the CD related to the case, which is possible only on the condition of payment of the prescribed fee.
Three to four months work, fixed fee
The court told that according to the interpreter, this work is very detailed, which will take at least three to four months of one interpreter and one typist to complete. Considering the additional cost of full-time interpreter, typist and preparation of copies, the total fee for transcription and translation has been fixed at Rs 10 lakh, which will be payable by the plaintiff i.e. Dhoni.
It is the responsibility of the plaintiff to bear the costs.
The court clarified that normally in a lawsuit, the plaintiff has to file necessary documents along with his complaint. The circumstances of this case necessitated the appointment of an official interpreter, therefore it is mandatory for the plaintiff to pay the cost of the work done.
Payment deadline and next hearing
The court has directed the interpreter to complete transcription and translation of the contents of the CD before the third week of March 2026. Also, Dhoni will have to deposit Rs 10 lakh in the Chief Justice Relief Fund of Madras High Court on or before March 12, 2026. The next hearing of the case has been fixed for March 12.
