‘O Romeo’ is a story entangled between poetry and violence, Shahid Kapoor and Trupti Dimri shine
O’Romeo Film Review: Movies based on Mumbai’s underworld have a world of their own, filled with murky streets, conversations shrouded in cigarette smoke, and faces burning with revenge. This world has once again been brought on the big screen in the film “O Romeo”, which is said to be inspired by the mafia queens of Mumbai. The story revolves around gangster Hussain Ustra aka Shahid Kapoor, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. Apart from Shahid, the film also stars Trupti Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwari, Farida Jalal, Tamannaah Bhatia and Vikrant Massey.

The initial pace of this film starring Shahid Kapoor and Trupti Dimri is a bit slow. The first hour itself reveals many layers, including characters, relationships, politics, and three songs. This is part of the director’s style, but at some places it loosens the grip of the story. By the time the interval comes, it becomes clear that the film wants to build its world slowly, but in this process the patience of the audience is thoroughly tested.

The script of the film seems a bit scattered, but the work of all the actors is excellent. Shahid Kapoor enters the role of Ustra with full aggression and depth. There is a sharpness in his acting, which we have seen in some films before. His emotional side comes to the fore in the climax, where the fire of revenge and the softness of love are seen together. Nana Patekar has got very little screen time, but he has left an amazing impact in every frame.
Trupti Dimri makes a strong presence in the character of Afshana aka ‘Lady Hitman’. His character is cruel as well as emotional. Avinash Tiwari has also done a better job as Jalal. Tamannaah Bhatia and Farida Jalal have also left their mark in a short span of time. But Vikrant Massey’s special appearance does not leave the desired impact as the audience wants to see more of him.
Music of “O Romeo”

Talking about music, “O Romeo” is full of songs. A song like ‘Paan Ki Dukan’ remains memorable. The background score adds to the drama, but the editing is loose and the transitions between scenes hamper the pace of the film. The length of the film also seems cumbersome at some places.
The Other Side of “O Romeo”
By juxtaposing love and cruelty, the story tries to show that both emotions can exist simultaneously within a human being. Here the director’s grip seems strong. The dialogues are heart touching at many places and the cinematography is impressive.
Final verdict of “O Romeo”
The question arises that what kind of film is “O Romeo”? Can it be seen? The answer is mixed. Audiences who like Vishal Bhardwaj may like this film. The looseness of the script and the problem of pace make it not completely satisfactory but the excellent acting definitely makes it worth watching once.
