Alia Bhatt comes with Don’t Be Shy: A Fresh Take on the Female Gaze

Alia Bhatt says her upcoming production Don’t Be Shy reimagines storytelling by shifting the focus through a female gaze emphasizing characters and motivations shaped by women, rather than traditional male-centred perspectives.

Global Showcase and Perspective

At the Prime Video Presents: International Originals event streamed globally, Alia said the film explores the world through a female gaze, portraying women with authenticity and depth beyond clichés.

She explained that the creative team was naturally drawn to women’s experiences, saying the narrative tends to focus on “fabulous women and fabulous characters that are women.” But she also made it clear the story includes interesting male characters too, adding balance and depth to the ensemble.

What the Story Is About

Don’t Be Shy centres on Shyamili ‘Shy’ Das, a 20-year-old whose well-planned life takes an unexpected turn after a sudden event. According to Alia, the film feels familiar like a classic holiday or summer story but with a distinct new voice and energy thanks to the director’s fresh approach.

A New Narrative Energy

Alia Bhatt said the film blends nostalgia with modern storytelling, offering the warmth of a classic coming-of-age drama while feeling fresh and surprising.

Under Alia Bhatt Production House

Produced by Alia and her sister Shaheen Bhatt under the banner Eternal Sunshine Productions, Don’t Be Shy promises elements of romance, heartbreak, music, and youthful experiences even with a quirky mention of a turtle in its announcement video. Full cast details and the release date are yet to be revealed.
