Tariq Rehman’s message after BNP’s big victory – “We must remain united”
Desk : Following Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) decisive victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, party chief Tariq Rahman appealed for the unity of the country. He presented the election results as a new mandate for democratic values and stressed the need for all to remain united despite political differences.
Rehman said in his address, “Our paths and ideas may be different, but in the interest of the country we must remain united. We need to work together.” He also said that the unity of the country is its strength, while division gives rise to weakness. He linked his message to democratic values and the responsibilities that come after elections.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party strengthened its position by winning 212 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance got 77 seats. The election followed the violent uprising in 2024 that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from power. According to Election Commission data, Sheikh Hasina’s party Bangladesh Awami League was barred from participating in the election.
Rahman said, “This victory is of Bangladesh, of democracy, it is of those who desired democracy and sacrificed their lives for it.” He also said that the incoming government will have to face many serious challenges, as Bangladesh’s economy has weakened due to the dictatorial government and constitutional institutions have also been affected.
The victory marks a major political comeback for 60-year-old Tariq Rahman, who has played a key role in national politics since returning to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in exile. He is the son of former Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1981, and his mother Khaleda Zia, a three-time Prime Minister, also a prominent political figure of Bangladesh.
Rahman said in his address that now Bangladesh has to start a new journey for democratic restoration, and this victory will strengthen democracy.
