As the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has removed the father’s name from the address field in the new format of Aadhaar card, citizens applying for driving licenses are facing major difficulties. Father’s name is required while filling the application on Sarathi portal, but thousands of applications are stuck in half because this information is not available through Aadhaar e-KYC. It is mandatory to fill father’s name while applying for online license as per rules of transport department. Most citizens apply through Aadhaar e-KYC. However, as the father’s name is not available separately in the new Aadhaar card, the relevant column remains blank while fetching the information on the ‘Sarathi’ portal. As the information in Aadhaar is locked, citizens are not allowed to enter father’s name by themselves. As a result, citizens are facing great inconvenience as applications are not being submitted. Due to this technical error, citizens have to visit RTO offices repeatedly. Especially young and rural applicants are facing more difficulties. Instead of simplifying all processes in the era of Digital India, it is being complained that this bottleneck is costing citizens both time and money.

Demand to stop obstruction of citizens
This problem has been pointed out by the organization ‘Maharashtra VLE Samvad’, on behalf of the organization a statement has been given to the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari as well as the Transport Minister of the state. Shankar Hola, the representative of the organization, has demanded that the ‘Sarathi’ portal should be amended immediately and the father’s name should be entered manually. Along with this, demands have been made that the National Information Center should immediately make necessary changes in the Sarathi software, if the father’s name is not available in Aadhaar, the information on the alternative Aadhaar document should be accepted and the citizens should be stopped until the technical difficulties are resolved. Everyone’s attention has been drawn to the steps taken by the Transport Department and the Central Government in this matter.
