ENG vs SCO: Tom Benton’s blistering innings for England to beat Scotland by 5 wickets

Adil Rashid’s blistering bowling followed by Tom Banton’s unbeaten half-century saw England win the ICC T20 World Cup Defeated Scotland by five wickets in Group C. England kept their Super Eight hopes alive with this win. After losing to the West Indies, two-time winners England bowled out Scotland for 152 runs in 19.4 overs with the help of Rashid (3/36) and Liam Dawson (2/34) in a crucial Group C match. At 113 for three in 12.3 overs, Scotland were in good shape and on course to cross the 180-run mark. But losing five wickets for 14 runs changed the course of the match.

Rashid took three wickets along with skipper Ricky Berrington (49) as Scotland’s innings collapsed. Dawson took two quick wickets and broke Scotland’s overall momentum. Chasing this small target, England initially lost two wickets for 13 runs in two overs. But then, Banton hit four fours and three sixes off 41 balls to win the match. Will Jacks hit a six and a four off Brad Wheel to win in 18.2 overs. England scored 155 for five.

England’s decisive match against Italy

England Narrowly won the first match against Nepal but lost against the West Indies. The win gave them four points and moved them to second place in the group behind West Indies. Now, England will face Italy on Monday to decide their place in the Super Eight. England needed a partnership and Banton was supported by Jacob Bethel (32 off 28 balls). The two added 66 runs off 45 balls to stabilize the innings. Phil Salt (2) and Jos Buttler (3) were dismissed early.

Banton was given life on seven runs and took advantage to play the winning knock. Davidson finally ended the partnership as Bethel’s slog-sweep shot went straight to backward point. Scotland kept the run rate down and the wicket of Harry Brook piled on the pressure. Brooke attempted a scoop, caught by Brad Wheel at short fine leg, which took England to 86 for 4 in 10.4 overs.

Brilliant bowling by Rashid from England

Earlier, Rashid took three wickets and Dawson two, as Scotland were bowled out for 152 in 19.4 overs. Fast bowler Jofra Archer took two wickets. Scotland were in good shape at 113 for three and looked likely to cross the 200-run mark, with captain Berrington and Tom Bruce (24) looking in good form. After conceding 26 runs in the first two overs, Rashid turned the match around. He dismissed Berrington one run short of his half-century.

In his next over, Rashid took two wickets in three balls, dismissing Matthew Cross and Mark Watt. England’s spin duo took five wickets in four overs, reducing Scotland’s total from 113 for 3 to 127 for 8. In the middle overs, the team lost five wickets for 14 runs. Jamie Overton (1/23) also bowled well and Scotland could not recover.

Jofra Archer took early wickets

England were dealt an early blow by Archer (2/24) who dismissed openers George Munsey (04) and Brendan McMullan (00) in three balls in the powerplay. Michael Jones (33) tried to add to the tally in the last over of the Powerplay, hitting two fours and a six off Sam Curran, but was dismissed in the same over.

Scotland were 42 for 3 in the Powerplay. Berrington and Bruce then added 71 off 41 balls for the fourth wicket, putting Scotland in a strong position. The pitch provided extra bounce and pace, which Archer took advantage of in his opening spells. Archer achieved a milestone during this period and became the third England fast bowler after Stuart Broad and Mark Wood to take 50 wickets in all three formats.
