Who was Kumar Bhaskar Varma : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gifted development projects worth Rs 5450 crore to Assam. The most special among these is the Rs 3000 crore Kumar Bhaskar Verma Bridge built in Guwahati. This huge six-lane bridge built on the Brahmaputra river will not only bridge the distance between Guwahati and North Guwahati, but will also give a new impetus to the economic development of Assam. But, do you know what is the importance of Kumar Bhaskar Verma, after whom this amazing example of modern engineering has been named, in Indian history?

Bhaskar Varman, also known in history as Kumar Raja. He was the most glorious and powerful emperor of the Varman dynasty of ancient Assam i.e. Kamrup. He ruled from 600 to 650 AD i.e. for 50 years. Their capital was Pragjyotishpur, located near present-day Guwahati. He proved to be the last, but greatest ruler of the Varman dynasty.

A great warrior emerged amidst adversity

Bhaskar Verma’s journey to power was full of struggles. When Mahasen Gupta attacked Kamrup, Bhaskar’s father was martyred in that war. His elder brother, the famous Varman, ruled for some time, but after his untimely demise around 600 AD, the reins of the kingdom came into the hands of Bhaskar Varma. He not only won back his lost empire but also expanded it to modern West Bengal and Sylhet in Bangladesh.

Friendship with Chinese travelers Hiuen Tsang and Harsh Vardhan

Emperor Bhaskar Varma’s fame was not limited to wars only, but he was also a patron of knowledge and scholars. The famous Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang came to Kamrup on his invitation and stayed there as his state guest for a month. Bhaskar Varma was also friends with the powerful emperor of North India, Harshavardhana. According to historical accounts, Bhaskar Varma had taken Hiuen Tsang to the banks of Ganga to King Harsha with an army of 20,000 elephants and 30,000 boats, which was a symbol of his military power and grandeur.

India’s ‘Impermeable Wall’

Samrat Bhaskar Varma was given the name ‘Eastern Wall’ of India. It is said. As long as he remained in power, he protected the borders of North-East India from foreign invaders. The seals of his empire found in the excavation of Nalanda even today testify to his historical greatness. Although he had no successor, due to which the Varman dynasty weakened after him, but the story of his bravery is still alive in the soil of Assam. Today, having this new bridge in his name is an attempt to revive the same great glorious history.
