‘Hasina’s extradition will not become a hindrance in relations’, BNP leader’s big statement after the elections; Know what is the plan

India Bangladesh Relations: After the landslide victory in Bangladesh elections, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has given positive indications regarding its future relations with India. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, one of the senior most leaders of the party and a close aide of Tariq Rehman, has said that the issue of extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will not become a hindrance in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Demand for refund under legal process

Speaking to the media, Fakhrul Islam stressed that the steps taken for the return of Sheikh Hasina will be completely in accordance with the established legal framework and international rules. He reminded that an extradition treaty already exists between India and Bangladesh. The BNP leader said that we want him to come back and face the law but this process will not affect bilateral relations.

Commenting on India’s stance so far, Fakhrul Islam said that India has never denied that it has given shelter to Sheikh Hasina nor has it said that it will not extradite her. The party hopes that India will cooperate appropriately in this matter. Earlier, BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed had also said that the party would continue its demand through legal and diplomatic channels.

Hasina accused of ‘crime against humanity’ case of

Sheikh Hasina resigned and moved to India in August 2024 following the violent student protests and has been living in New Delhi since then. In November 2025, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh convicted him of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death. However, this hearing was held in his absence.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Tariq Rehman after BNP’s landslide victory in the recent parliamentary elections, which is being seen as a new and positive beginning between the two countries. BNP has won a clear majority in this election after Awami League was banned from electoral activities.
