Swami Avimukteshwaranand Maharaj hit back at the Chief Minister on the Shankaracharya controversy, said – a king can become a yogi, but a yogi does not become a king again.

New Delhi. The discussion has intensified in political and religious circles regarding the rhetoric between Jyotishpeeth’s Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Maharaj and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Avimukteshwaranand has reacted sharply to the Chief Minister’s statement in which he had said that not every person can call himself Shankaracharya and no one is above the law. After this statement, Shankaracharya retorted and said that in the Sanatan tradition, Shankaracharya’s identity is not determined by any political certificate or government recognition. He said that one who has become a Yogi should stay away from the throne. A king may become a yogi, but a yogi does not become a king again. So the question is that if you are a Yogi, detached, then how is the Chief Minister accepting power?

‘No CM will appoint Shankaracharya’

In an interview given to a media organization, Avimukteshwaranand said that SP had killed Shankaracharya. You have also killed. Meaning, whoever SP killed, we can also kill him. If this is the definition, then how can you be different from SP? The same arrogance which had risen on Akhilesh’s forehead in 2015 has now risen. Akhilesh was ruined. Now let’s look at them. There is no such tradition in Sanatan that any Chief Minister or Government appoints Shankaracharya by giving a certificate.

He said that the traditions of Sanatan Dharma are centuries old and the religious positions in them are determined on the basis of spiritual tradition, Guru-disciple tradition and religious beliefs. He said that the government or any political party cannot decide who will be Shankaracharya or not.

What did CM Yogi say?

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had presented his stand on the Shankaracharya controversy on Friday. He said that no person can call himself Shankaracharya and no one is above the law, not even the Chief Minister. Yogi said that in Sanatan Dharma the post of Shankaracharya is considered supreme and sacred and it has its own traditions and rules, which are necessary to be followed.

He alleged that the issue over which controversy was created in Magh Mela was not genuine but a deliberate attempt was made to spoil the atmosphere. He said that in view of the crowd of four and a half crore devotees on Mauni Amavasya, the administration had made special arrangements and no one could be allowed to break the rules. Taking aim at the opposition, Yogi asked that if the person concerned was Shankaracharya then why was action taken against him in the past.

‘No one becomes a yogi by wearing saffron clothes’ Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav hit back at the Chief Minister’s statement and said that no one becomes a yogi just by wearing saffron clothes or getting the ears pierced and saints should be respected. The politics of the state has heated up on this issue.
