Colombo: With the help of captain Lorcan Tucker’s 94 runs in 51 balls, Ireland defeated Oman by 96 runs in a one-sided match of Group B of the T20 World Cup on Saturday. When sent to bat first, Ireland scored 235 runs for five wickets. Tucker hit ten fours and four sixes in his innings and on the basis of his innings, Ireland recovered from 47 for three wickets and made the highest score of this tournament so far. In reply, Oman team was out for 139 runs in 18 overs. Aamir Kaleem scored 50 and Hamad Mirza scored 46 runs. Oman’s eight batsmen could not even reach double figures. For Ireland, Josh Little took three wickets for 16 runs in four overs. Matthew Humphreys and Barry McCarthy got two wickets each.

Despite this win, Ireland is in fourth place while Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Australia are in the top three places. Earlier, choosing to bowl, Oman bowled five out of six overs of the powerplay through spinners. It also paid off when 38-year-old Shakeel took three wickets in three overs, reducing Ireland’s score to 47 runs for three wickets. He dismissed Tim Tector in the first over after which he took the wicket of Ross Adair. Adair had made a good start by hitting three fours off Shah Faesal but could not survive. Shakeel also sent Harry Tector to the pavilion in the fifth over.

The oldest player in the tournament, 44-year-old veteran Aamir Kaleem took the wicket of Kurtis Kaempfer. After this, however, Tucker took charge of Ireland’s innings by holding one end. The Ireland captain hit ten fours and four sixes in his innings. He made a partnership of 101 runs in 56 balls with Jareth Delany (56). After this, he added 70 runs in 19 balls with George Dockrell (35). Dockrell hit five sixes in his nine-ball innings.

Ireland scored 86 runs in the last four overs. Tucker got a lease of life in the beginning of the innings, taking full advantage of which he completed his half-century in 35 balls by hitting Kalim for a four. Delany scored 18 runs by hitting two sixes off Jiten Ramanandi in the 15th over. He completed his half-century in 28 balls but fell victim to Shah Faisal in the 17th over. Tucker scored 26 runs in one over by hitting three sixes and two fours off Mohammad Nadeem. In the 19th over of the innings, Dockrell scored 21 runs by hitting two sixes. He also took the team to the highest score of this tournament by hitting sixes on the last three balls.
