Brahmaputra Twin Tube Underwater Tunnel

Underwater Twin Tube Tunnel: Modi cabinet has given a historic gift to Assam. The government has approved the construction of the country’s first underwater rail-road tunnel (Twin Tube Tunnel) connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh under the Brahmaputra river. The construction of this approximately 15.8 kilometer long tunnel will lead to technological development in the country and will also significantly reduce the travel time. With the construction of this tunnel, the 240 kilometer long route will be reduced to only 34 kilometers, which will give a tremendous boost to connectivity and trade in the region.

What will be the facilities?

For the first time in India, such an underwater twin-tube tunnel is being built, in which both road and rail facilities will be available simultaneously. The special thing about this tunnel is that one of its tubes will have a single track for trains, while the other tube will be for vehicles. This project is also very important from the security point of view of the country, because with its help, in any emergency situation, army soldiers and ammunition can be transported from one place to another in a very short time.

How will be the design of twin tube underwater tunnel?

  • This tunnel will be made in such a way that when the train passes through it, vehicles will not be able to run at that time.
  • ‘Ballistic track’ will be used in this and the trains will run completely on electricity.
  • This entire project, including tunnel, road and railway track, will be 33.7 kilometers long.
  • It will cost approximately Rs 18,600 crore to complete this entire work.
  • The expenses of this big project will be jointly borne by three ministries i.e. Road Transport, Railways and Defense Ministry.

A journey that takes hours can be completed in minutes

  • Let us tell you that two separate tunnels will be built here, in each of which traffic will move in the same direction.
  • This tunnel will be built at a depth of 32 meters from the deepest part of the Brahmaputra river.
  • It will take 5 years to complete this tunnel, after which the time to go from Gohpur to Numaligarh will reduce from 6 and a half hours to just 34 minutes.
  • At the same time, the travel distance will reduce from 240 kilometers to only 34 kilometers.
