Swiggy’s ‘ice cream rice’ post sparks laughter and outrage online
The internet’s love for food experiments reached a new high — or low — on Chocolate Day, after a quirky post by food delivery platform Swiggy left users divided. The brand shared an image of plain boiled rice paired with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, triggering equal parts amusement and disbelief across social media.
A fusion no one asked for
Shared on X, the image showed a plate of rice with chocolate ice cream served alongside — without curry, dal, vegetables or even pickle. Captioned cheekily, “Dinner aur dessert dono saath mein kar liya” (Dinner and dessert done together), the post instantly went viral, especially as it coincided with Chocolate Day celebrations.
While India has long embraced food innovation — from chocolate samosas to ice cream dosas — this particular pairing struck many as a step too far.
Internet reacts with memes and mockery
Social media users were quick to respond. Some expressed sheer confusion, with one user writing, “Yeh kya hai?” accompanied by laughing emojis. Others coined playful names like “Ricecream”, while meme creators flooded timelines with dramatic refusals and exaggerated horror reactions.
A few adventurous users, however, defended the idea, pointing out that rice-based desserts exist across cultures and that sweet-and-starch combinations are not entirely new. Still, the dominant sentiment remained one of comic disbelief.
Brand humour and viral marketing
Swiggy has often used humour, relatability and playful provocation to stay relevant online, and this post followed that familiar pattern. By tapping into festive timing and internet curiosity, the brand once again succeeded in sparking conversation — even if most of it revolved around what not to eat.
As food trends continue to blur the line between creativity and chaos, Swiggy’s ice cream rice serves as a reminder that on the internet, reactions matter as much as recipes.
