“Relationships should start afresh,” Tariq Rahman’s advisor said, adding that India should accept the changed reality.
Dhaka. Bangladesh is set to have a permanent government after nearly a year and a half. The results of the general elections held on February 12th resulted in a landslide victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Tariq Rahman will now be sworn in as Prime Minister on February 17th. Ahead of this, Tariq Rahman’s advisor has issued a significant statement regarding relations with India.
Humayun Kabir, an advisor to Tarique Rahman, said that Bangladesh wants to start a new relationship with India. He also said that it is India’s responsibility to accept Bangladesh’s changed political reality.
In his statement, he said Bangladesh wants to renew ties with India now that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party are no longer in power. The adviser to BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman also stressed that the two countries should work together for “mutual benefit.”
Tarique Rahman’s BNP party won a historic victory in the election results released on Friday (February 13), winning more than two-thirds of the seats.
