Modi kept distance from Tariq’s swearing-in, Om Birla will go to Bangladesh instead of PM! Surprising reason revealed

Tarique Rahman Oath Ceremony: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s newly elected Prime Minister Tariq Rahman. In his place, the Government of India has decided to send Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Yesterday, Tariq Rehman had sent an invitation to PM Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

According to sources of news agency ANI, along with Speaker Om Birla, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will also be a part of this high level delegation. The eyes of the whole world are on this historic ceremony to be held on February 17 at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building in Dhaka, which will witness a major change of power in the neighboring country.

Why is PM Modi not going to Bangladesh?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is busy with bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai and preparations for the Artificial Intelligence Summit to be held in Delhi, due to which he is not able to go to Dhaka. This delegation being sent by India underlines the deep and lasting friendship between the two countries.

Exile ended after 17 years

Bangladesh Nationalist Party has won a massive victory in the recently held 13th parliamentary elections of Bangladesh. Tariq Rehman returned home from London in December 2025 after 17 years of exile and now he is going to take over as the Prime Minister. His father Zia ur Rehman was the founder of BNP, while his mother Khaleda Zia was a former Prime Minister.

BNP got two-third majority

Rehman, who left the country amid corruption allegations in 2008, has created history by securing two-thirds majority in this election. This election was the first to be held since Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power following the 2024 student movement. Following his victory, Rahman called for national unity and promised to strengthen democracy, law and order and economic stability.

New beginning of India-Bangladesh relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had congratulated Tariq Rehman on phone on February 13 itself and remembered all the sacrifices made to protect democracy. Chief Advisor to the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has invited leaders of 13 countries including China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia for the event.

The decision to send a high-level delegation from India is being considered a symbol of a new beginning between the two countries. BNP has always emphasized balanced relations with India. Tariq Rehman has also clarified that he will not have excessive dependence on any one country, but will build broad international partnerships.

Democracy returned in Bangladesh

This swearing-in ceremony is being considered a symbol of the return of democracy in Bangladesh. Tariq Rehman has promised to fulfill the aspirations of the youth, be strict against corruption and create employment. Bangladesh is an important neighbor for India and both the countries are linked by common history, culture and border.
