The latest statement of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has angered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Owaisi has taken a sharp dig at Veer Savarkar by calling Tipu Sultan a ‘martyr’ who fought against the British, after which BJP has accused him of distorting history.

Savarkar vs Tipu Sultan: Owaisi’s sharp attack

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, while addressing a public meeting, said that Tipu Sultan fought the British and sacrificed his life in the battlefield. Attacking Veer Savarkar without naming him, he said, “Tipu did not write ‘love letters’ to the British to apologize, as Savarkar had done.” Owaisi claimed that when Tipu Sultan was martyred, the ring found on his finger had ‘Ram’ written on it.

Reference to Abdul Kalam and Gandhiji

To strengthen his point, Owaisi referred to former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s book ‘Wings of Fire’. He said that Kalam Saheb himself had written that India’s missile and rocket technology was an extension of Tipu’s dreams. Not only this, Owaisi gave the example of Mahatma Gandhi’s magazine ‘Young India’ and said that Gandhiji had considered Tipu Sultan as a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity.

BJP’s counterattack: ‘Owaisi is distorting history’

On this statement of Owaisi, Telangana BJP President N. Ramachander Rao has given a strong reaction. He said that Owaisi and his party are playing with history by glorifying Tipu Sultan. The BJP argues that Tipu Sultan had persecuted Hindus in the Mysore and Karnataka regions and had an anti-Hindu mindset. Rao said India would never accept this ‘false history’.

Maharashtra politics at the root of controversy

The controversy deepened when Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal compared Tipu Sultan with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has termed this comparison as ‘shameful’ and ‘condemnable’. At present, there is a dispute going on between the ruling party and the opposition regarding the photo of Tipu Sultan in Malegaon.
