PM Modi will not attend Tariq Rehman’s swearing in, has some other plan
India will send Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to the swearing-in ceremony of the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tariq Rahman will take oath as Prime Minister in Dhaka on Tuesday. BNP has won the recently held 2026 general elections with an overwhelming majority.
This election is very special for Bangladesh. This was the first general election after the massive students’ agitation in 2024. The government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had fallen in that movement. Hasina had to seek refuge in India due to security reasons and is still in India. Hasina’s party Awami League was barred from taking part in the elections.

Got two-thirds majority
BNP won 212 out of 299 seats in Parliament. This is more than two-thirds majority. Tariq Rehman won from both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 seats. He lived in exile in London for 17 years. He returned in December 2025 and is now going to become the Prime Minister. This is a big success for him and BNP.
Tariq Rehman appealed for unity after the victory. He said that this victory is dedicated to those who sacrificed for democracy. Interim government head Muhammad Yunus also congratulated him. Yunus’s interim government will now resign and hand over power to the new government.
Invitation to leaders of 13 countries
The ceremony will take place in the South Plaza of the National Parliament. Bangladesh had sent invitations to leaders of 13 countries, which also includes India. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will go on behalf of India. He will also be accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. This decision was taken on Sunday.
There have been ups and downs in the relations between India and Bangladesh for some time. Relations were affected after Hasina came to India in 2024. Now with the coming of BNP government, there will be fresh talks between the two countries. India has always said that it wants a strong friendship with Bangladesh. Om Birla’s presence is an indication that India wants to maintain democracy and good relations with neighboring countries.

Celebration on 17th February
This ceremony will take place on 17 February 2026. The new MPs will take oath in the morning and Tariq Rehman and his cabinet will take oath in the evening. The people of Bangladesh are hoping that the new government will bring the economy back on track, increase employment and strengthen democracy. Young voters took a large part in the elections and demanded change.
The political atmosphere in Bangladesh has changed with the victory of BNP. Now it remains to be seen how the new government works and how relations with India progress.
