PM Modi will not attend Tariq Rehman’s swearing-in ceremony, Om Birla will represent India
New Delhi, 15 February. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the swearing-in ceremony of new Prime Minister Tariq Rahman in Bangladesh on Tuesday (February 17) due to pre-scheduled programs. According to the central government, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India at the proposed ceremony in Dhaka.

It is noteworthy that after registering a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections of Bangladesh with two-thirds majority, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Tariq Rahman is going to take oath as the next Prime Minister of the country on February 17. The head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, has invited 13 countries including India to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of Tariq Rahman.

At present, as per the pre-determined schedule, bilateral talks are to be held between PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai on 17th February. For this reason, the Central Government has made it clear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not represent India at the swearing-in ceremony.
From the Indian side, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will participate in the swearing-in ceremony of the new government of Bangladesh. This high-level representation is being considered a symbol of deep and lasting relations between the two countries.
