James’s wife Kimberly Van Der Beek shared the fundraiser link on Instagram on Feb. 11, one day after announcing her husband’s death.
“My friends created this link to support me and my children during this time,” she wrote. “With gratitude and a broken heart.”
James, best known for his role in the 1990s television drama “Dawson’s Creek,” died at 49 after battling bowel cancer. He is survived by Kimberly and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah.
According to the fundraiser page, the costs associated with the actor’s extended medical treatment had “left the family out of funds.” It added that the family is working to remain in their home and ensure the children can continue their education while maintaining stability during a difficult period.
The initial fundraising goal was set at $350,000 before being raised several times, first to $500,000, then $700,000 and later to $1 million, as donations quickly exceeded expectations, according to The Guardian.
James publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2024 and subsequently began auctioning memorabilia from past projects to help cover treatment expenses for himself and other families affected by cancer.
According to Forbescolorectal cancer is a malignant disease that often develops from slow-growing polyps in the lining of the large intestine or rectum. It primarily affects adults over 45 and remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide.
