Center approves wheat-sugar export; Big decision to give relief to farmers

New Delhi : The central government has taken an important decision in the interest of farmers by approving the export of wheat and sugar. The government has allowed the export of 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of wheat, 5 lakh metric tonnes of wheat products and an additional 5 lakh metric tonnes of sugar. This decision was announced after a detailed review of the food security situation.

The government has clarified that this export will not affect the country’s food security. Food Corporation of India (FCI) is estimated to have around 18.2 million metric tonnes of wheat available in its central stock till April 1, 2026. In addition, the private sector has wheat stocks of around 7.5 million metric tonnes for 2025-26, up by 3.2 million tonnes from the previous year. Meanwhile, the area under wheat has increased from 328.04 lakh hectares to 334.17 lakh hectares in Rabi 2026 season. Increasing farmers’ confidence in Minimum Support Price (MSP) and strong procurement system is expected to improve production. The objective behind this decision is to reduce excess stock, stabilize market prices and achieve effective stock rotation.

Meanwhile, regarding sugar, 1.5 lakh MT export was earlier approved in November 2025. Now an additional 5 lakh metric tonnes of sugar export quota has been announced. The additional quota will be available only to factories exporting at least 70 per cent of the allotted quota till June 30, 2026, and will not be transferable. The government believes that this decision will facilitate the management of surplus stocks, increase the income of farmers and stabilize the agricultural market.
