Kapil Sharma on loss, depression and rising again

Actor and comedian Kapil Sharma has opened up about the emotional highs and lows that shaped his life, including the loss of his father and a difficult battle with depression.

In a recent interview, Kapil reflected on how each phase of his journey, whether joyful or painful, played a role in shaping who he is today.

Coping with personal loss

Kapil recalled how life changed dramatically after his father’s death in 2004. “When my father was there, that phase was different. After he passed away, life went completely off track,” he said.

He shared that even during moments of professional triumph, the absence of his father felt deeply. When he won The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and received a cheque of ₹10 lakh, he broke down thinking how proud his father would have been.

He also remembered quietly standing outside his home at 9 pm when his show aired, hearing laughter from nearby houses and wishing his father could witness the success.

Battling depression at 36

Kapil revealed that at 36, he faced severe depression, a phase that led many to speculate that his career was over. “People started saying, ‘He’s finished,’” he said.

However, marriage and the revival of his show marked a turning point. He went on to complete over 300 episodes again, rebuilding both his career and confidence.

A journey of reinvention

After winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007, Kapil rose to national fame with Comedy Nights with Kapil. He later ventured into films with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon and appeared in projects such as Firangi, Zwigato and Crew.

He currently hosts The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, which has completed four seasons and is set for another.

Kapil’s journey stands as a reminder that setbacks do not define a person’s destiny. Through grief, public scrutiny and mental health struggles, he chose resilience — proving that even in comedy, the story behind the laughter often carries the deepest lessons.
