Tipu Sultan controversy: Clash between BJP-Congress workers during demonstration, many people injured
Maharashtra: Political rhetoric suddenly took a violent turn in Pune on Sunday. The controversy that started when a Congress leader compared Tipu Sultan with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj escalated so much that workers of both the parties came face to face. The conflict that started with sloganeering escalated into stone pelting, in which about nine people were injured. Let us tell you that the whole controversy started with the remarks of Congress leader Harshvardhan Sapkal.
Let us tell you that in his statement, the Congress leader had compared Shivaji Maharaj’s idea of ’Swaraj’ and Tipu Sultan’s struggle against the British. In protest against this statement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced a demonstration outside Congress Bhawan in Pune. During the demonstration, BJP and Indian National Congress (Congress) workers came face to face. Both sides raised slogans against each other and within no time the situation went out of control. Some people climbed the walls and started pelting stones.
Police registered cases
According to Joint Police Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma, three Congress workers, two BJP workers, two policemen and two media persons were injured in this clash. Everyone suffered minor injuries. Police have registered a case against workers of both the parties and started investigation. In the evening, a formal complaint about the entire incident was lodged at Shivajinagar police station.
Controversy started over the picture
Actually, the controversy started with the installation of Tipu Sultan’s portrait in the office of the Deputy Mayor in Malegaon. Shiv Sena councilors and some Hindu organizations objected to this. Responding to this incident, Harshvardhan Sapkal had given a statement, which heated up the political atmosphere.
Congress and BJP face to face
Congress’ Pune unit president Arvind Shinde has filed a written complaint against BJP officials. BJP leaders have also filed a complaint against Sapkal. BJP alleged that this statement has hurt the sentiments of Hindus.
Congress leader Sachin Sawant accused BJP of adopting double standards. He says that earlier some BJP leaders had praised Tipu Sultan on public platforms, but now the protest is being done for political gains. He also claimed that in the past, resolutions were passed in the name of Tipu Sultan in some municipal bodies.
Long standing differences regarding Tipu Sultan
There have been differences of opinions in the country regarding Tipu Sultan for a long time. One section sees him as a ruler who fought against the British, while the other section criticizes his rule. In contrast, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is widely respected for his military ability and public welfare administration.
