West Bengal SIR: In the wake of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, there are signs that the politics will heat up day by day. Similarly, it has been reported that the Central Election Commission (ECI) has suspended seven officials from West Bengal with immediate effect. The action has been taken against these officials for gross misconduct, dereliction of duty and abuse of authority during the scrutiny of voter list under Special Intensive Reforms (SIR). The action is said to have been taken by the Commission under Section 13CC of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
According to the information received, among the suspended officials, Assistant Election Registration Officer (AERO) of Samsherganj Vidhan Sabha constituency in Murshidabad district. Sefoor Rahman, Farakka Assembly Constituency AERO Nitish Das, Maynaguri Assembly Constituency AERO Dalia Ray Chaudhary, Suti Assembly Constituency AERO SK Murshid Alam, Canning East Assembly Constituency AERO two (Satyajit Das and Joydeep Kundu) and Debra Assembly Constituency AERO Debashish Biswas.

Instructions to the Chief Secretary
The Election Commission has ordered the Chief Secretary of West Bengal to take departmental disciplinary action against these officers. Instructions have also been given to inform about this action without delay. Maintaining the fairness and transparency of the electoral process is their top priority. The commission has also said.
Revision of Electoral Roll (SIR) is a sensitive and important process, which involves the removal of ineligible voters from the list and inclusion of eligible voters. The commission has also been told that any negligence in this process may pose a threat to the credibility of the election process.

Carelessness will not be tolerated
Further, due to this action being taken by the Election Commission, no irregularities or negligence in the election work will be tolerated. It is being said that this action is also a vague message that this is part of the Commission’s preparations for the upcoming elections.
A team of the Election Commission will visit Assam today, February 16-18, to review the preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in five states. During the visit, the Election Commission will hold meetings with various political parties, senior police officers and administrative officials and review the electoral system.
