In road accidents, 7 days treatment, 1.5 lakh expenses and ₹0’ Bill, government launches ‘PM relief’ Scheme, know the benefits
PM Relief Scheme: Road accidents change the lives of thousands of families in India every year. Many times fatal accidents occur because the injured cannot be taken to the hospital on time or there are worries about money before treatment. In view of this, the Central Government has started the PM RAHAT (Road Accident Victim Hospitalization and Assured Treatment) scheme.
Under the scheme, a person injured in a road accident will get cashless treatment within 7 days of the accident. The government will bear the cost of treatment up to a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh and the patient will not have to spend even a single rupee. According to experts, if the injured are taken to the hospital within the first hour (golden hour), then almost half of the deaths can be prevented. PM RAHAT Yojana is an attempt to fulfill this objective.
The fear of legal problems will end
In the scheme, the people who help during the accident have been called Rahveer or Good Samaritan. Such people will help the injured, they will not have to fear legal problems and they will not need to spend money on treatment.
At the time of an accident, the victim, passerby or any person can call 112. Information about the nearest hospital and ambulance will be available through call. This entire process is linked to the Emergency Response Support System, through which police, ambulance and hospital work in coordination with each other.
What is special in PM Relief Scheme?
PM RAHAT scheme is based on two government digital systems:
- eDAR (Electronic Detailed Accident Report) – operated by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
- TMS 2.0 (Transaction Management System) – Handles treatment and payment through the National Health Authority.
Through these systems, the process of hospitalization, treatment, claims and payment is completed online and instantly.
Treatment duration and payment
- Stabilization treatment for 24 hours if there is no serious injury.
- If life is in danger, treatment for 48 hours.
- Treatment facility for 7 days in both cases.
- Hospitals will be paid from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund or funds from insurance companies.
- In hit and run or uninsured cases, the central government will pay.
Who will be responsible for resolving complaints?
The complaints related to the scheme will be resolved by the District Road Safety Committee. The responsibility will be at the level of District Collector or Magistrate, so that people will not have to visit separate offices.

Impact of PM Relief Scheme
Transport, health, insurance and police departments are working together in PM RAHAT scheme. Its real impact will depend on how many hospitals will join the scheme, how fast the number 112 will work and whether there will be any delay in police confirmation. The central government says that in the coming time it will become clear how effective the scheme is in saving lives in road accidents.
