Why Terminator Zero Got Canceled, Season 2 & Arnold Plans Revealed

Terminator Zero was canceled by Netflix after just one season, and the show’s creator recently addressed the streaming service’s decision. Mattson Tomlin broke the news on X (formerly Twitter), explaining the reality behind Netflix’s decision.

Mattson Tomlin on why Terminator Zero was canceled and Season 2 plans

“The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it,” Tomlin wrote. The writer also revealed that he had ambitious plans for Terminator Zero that are now canceled.

“I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is,” Tomlin added. The animated series was released on Netflix two years ago. It is a reboot set immediately after 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Despite earning solid reviews, the viewership numbers simply weren’t there to justify the expensive production. Tomlin explained in a follow-up post, “The show was expensive and very time consuming. The only way they could justify it was if the audience showed up for it, and they just didn’t.”

However, when questioned about whether Netflix failed to properly promote the series, Tomlin defended the streamer’s efforts. “We did big, in-person premier events in NY and LA, a pretty robust press junket for an animated series, and it lived on the front page of Netflix for 2+ weeks. I feel like NF did right by the series.”

He also revealed the plans he had for the show. Tomlin wrote“Maybe someday I’ll do a big thread about the plans I had for the full five-season run.” He added, “I’ve written all of the season two scripts and outlined pretty much all of season three.” Tomlin also addressed whether Arnold Schwarzenegger could have made an appearance on the show. He said it could’ve happened, but only if his introduction felt “awesome and not lame.”
