Modi Calls for Defence Modernisation to Match Current Realities – Read
In an interview with PTI, the Prime Minister described the latest Union Budget as forward-looking, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthen defence capabilities by aligning them with “current realities.” He emphasised that a strong, well-equipped military is vital for national security and preparedness in a rapidly changing world.
The Budget 2026 allocation for defence represents a significant increase, with total spending raised to ₹7.85 lakh crore, nearly 15 percent higher than the previous year. A notable rise in capital expenditure — earmarked for equipment upgrades, procurement, and modernisation — reflects an enhanced focus on advanced capabilities and indigenous production.
Modi also reiterated that modernisation efforts are part of a long-term vision for a stronger India and not simply responses to immediate pressures. He stated that continuous investment in defence preparedness is essential to meet emerging security demands and to support the nation’s strategic objectives.
