Bangladesh: From Bhutan PM to Om Birla, preparations for oath ceremony intensified!

The swearing-in ceremony for the formation of the new government in Bangladesh is going to take place on 17 February. On this occasion, around 1,200 celebrities from other countries are expected to attend the function. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 4:00 pm on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the National Parliamentary Building in Dhaka.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tariq Rahman won a landslide victory in the recently held parliamentary elections, paving the way for the formation of a new government.

Many well-known international personalities will participate in this event. Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal are expected to attend.

Apart from this, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma will be present in this swearing-in ceremony, while Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa will also participate. Britain’s Indo-Pacific Under-Secretary of State, Seema Malhotra, is also expected to attend. At the same time, there is a possibility that Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu may also participate in this ceremony.

According to diplomatic rules, invitations have been sent to all the countries, but at present no official confirmation has been given by some countries regarding their participation in the ceremony.

On the Indian side, the Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday confirmed that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Tariq Rahman’s government in Bangladesh.

In this regard, the MEA said in an official statement, “The participation of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in this important event reflects the deep and steadfast friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh, which ensures India’s commitment to the democratic values that bind our two countries.”

It further said, “As neighbors bound by common history, culture and mutual respect, India welcomes the arrival of an elected government in Bangladesh under the leadership of Tariq Rahman, whose vision and values have received overwhelming support from the people.”

Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are already underway at the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat. Traditionally, the ceremony takes place in the designated oath taking chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhawan. In the 13th parliamentary elections, voting was held on 12 February for 299 seats out of 300.

The Election Commission declared unofficial results for 297 seats. However, the results for Chittagong-2 and Chittagong-4 have not been released yet following the direction of the High Court.

According to the results declared so far, BNP won 209 out of 297 seats in the February 12 elections and its candidates are leading in two seats, including Chittagong-2 and 4, where the results have been withheld. His allies have claimed three seats.

On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami has won 68 seats, while its allies in the Jamaat-led 11-party electoral alliance have won nine seats. Prothom Alo said Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) won one seat and independent candidates won seven seats.

If Tariq Rahman becomes the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the country will get a male PM after about 35 years. Meanwhile, experts have warned that the country faces a major challenge in dealing with the unrest and rising Islamic fundamentalism that had marked the 18-month tenure of Muhammad Yunus’ interim government.
