Let us decide who your parents are? CJI Surya Kant got angry on SIR petition, said – what nonsense is this?

The process of special intensive revision of voter list in West Bengal has once again reached the threshold of the Supreme Court. Questions have been raised in the petition on the validity of the SIR. On which Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure. This issue has been a center of dispute between the state’s Trinamool Congress government and the Election Commission of India for a long time, where the conflict between the two sides is continuously increasing.

The petitioner has challenged the use of logical discretion list in the SIR. During the hearing on this, the CJI made strong remarks calling the petition an abuse of Article 32. At the same time, ECI has suspended seven officials on charges of misconduct related to SIR, while the final voter list is going to be released on February 28.

Petition in SC and rebuke from CJI

Mohammad Zimfarhad Nowaz had filed the petition. He has challenged the use of Logical Discrepancy List in the SIR process in West Bengal. On this, CJI Surya Kant said that in Article 32 you want us to decide who your father, mother and etc. are. This is a joke of Article 32 petition.

Publication of final voter list

According to the media, on Saturday an official informed that the final voter list will be published on February 28. The hearing related to mistakes and discrepancies in the spelling of names began on December 27 and continued in camps set up in schools, club rooms and administrative buildings across the state, the official said. He told that the Election Officer is now taking forward the Election Commission SIR process rapidly. In-depth scrutiny of documents and disposal of claims and objections will be completed by February 21. After this, the final voter list will be published on 28th February.

An official said that any documents pending with the Assistant Electoral Registration Officers should be uploaded by Monday. During the SIR process, about 58 lakh names were found which were considered appropriate to be removed from the list and were excluded from the draft voter list published in December. The last date for publication of the final voter list was 14 February, which was later extended by the Election Commission to 28 February.

ECI suspended seven officials

The Election Commission has suspended seven officials in West Bengal with immediate effect on charges of serious misconduct, dereliction of duty and misuse of authority attached to SIR. All these officers were working as Assistant Electoral Registration Officers for the Election Commission. Citing the orders, Election Commission officials said that the Election Commission has directed the State Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty that the concerned officers should immediately initiate disciplinary action against these officers through their respective departments and inform the Commission about it.
