Nuclear deal or war! Iran joins hands with UN before talks with America, will strict sanctions be removed?
Iran Nuclear Deal Geneva: Another effort has begun to end the years-old deadlock over the nuclear program between Iran and America. On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held an important meeting with Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog (IAEA) in Geneva. The high-level meeting comes just before the second round of indirect talks between the US and Iran, brokered by Oman, begins on Tuesday.
The ball is now in America’s court
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi criticized the social media platform ‘X’ But making his intentions clear, he wrote that he had reached Geneva with genuine intentions to achieve a just and equitable agreement. However, he also said in strong words that bowing down to threats will not be a part of the talks. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi indicated that Tehran is ready to compromise on the nuclear issue if the US shows sincerity and gives concrete assurances on the lifting of international sanctions.
Joined by nuclear experts, I will meet @rafaelmgrossi on Mon for deep technical discussion. Also meeting @badralbusaidi ahead of diplomacy with US on Tuesday.
I am in Geneva with real ideas to achieve a fair and equitable deal.

Tense history and military pressure
These talks are taking place at a time when military tension is at its peak in the region. Last year too, nuclear talks were held between the two countries, but that process was broken midway due to the attack on Iran by Israel and the subsequent bombing of Iranian nuclear sites by the US. At present, US President Donald Trump continues the policy of maximum pressure on Iran.
Trump recently ordered the deployment of the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Middle East, which is being seen as a strategy to put pressure on Iran.
Nuclear weapons threat and proliferation
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi has already warned that Iran has enriched uranium to 60% purity, a technically very small step away from weapons-grade levels.
According to Grossi, Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium is enough to make 10 nuclear bombs if it wanted, although this does not mean it currently possesses such weapons. The Trump administration’s clear stance is that Iran cannot be allowed to enrich uranium under any new agreement, which Tehran is not ready to accept.

Israel’s concerns
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington to press President Trump that any agreement should include conditions not only for the nuclear program but also for stopping funding of Iran’s ballistic missile program and proxy groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
