‘The commercial importance of India-Pakistan matches will soon reduce due to one-sided competition’ Pakistani commentator
In the T20 World Cup, India has defeated Pakistan in eight out of nine matches.
IND vs PAK Match: Former Pakistani players and cricket experts believe that India-Pakistan matches are becoming increasingly one-sided. Due to India’s dominance, the commercial importance of these matches also seems to be gradually decreasing.
India’s easy victory on Sunday gave a big blow to Pakistan. It was expected that the players would perform better on the field after the tough stance taken by the country’s administrators during the recent standoff with the International Cricket Council (ICC), but that did not happen. India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs, making the difference between the two teams clearly visible.
In the T20 World Cup, India has defeated Pakistan in eight out of nine matches. At the same time, in the Asia Cup last year, the team led by Salman Ali Aga also had to face three consecutive defeats against India.
India’s dominance over Pakistan in limited overs cricket can be gauged from the fact that since winning the 2017 Champions Trophy final, Pakistan has not been able to win a single ODI match against its arch-rival.
Former Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, Lieutenant General (Retd) Tauqeer Zia believes that with every defeat, the commercial importance of these much talked about ICC matches is decreasing. He said, “The reality is that the matches between Pakistan and India have now become very one-sided. This time there was more discussion because the PCB first announced the boycott of the match against India and later withdrew it. But sooner or later the importance of these matches for the ICC and the member boards may reduce.
Parvez Mir, who runs an advertising agency here, also agreed with this. He says that Pakistan fans are now almost losing hope of the return of the equal rivalry of that era.
Mir said, “Now fans are also slowly losing hope as sponsors and advertisers also do not want to see one-sided matches. When the boycott decision was announced, many Indians said that it does not matter because the outcome of the match is almost already decided. If the matches are not close and competitive, the commercial importance of these matches will further reduce.”
Nadeem Mandviwala, a film distributor and cinema owner in Karachi, said that during the screening of the match, when Pakistan lost the first four wickets, most of the people present there walked out.
Cricket writer and analyst Omair Alavi said, “Even if we qualify for the semi-finals, there is a possibility that we will face India again, and we all know what the result will be. That’s what is most disappointing.”
Veterans like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq, Rameez Raja and Aamir Sohail, who were part of Pakistani teams that won many matches against India, are now commentators. According to Shoaib and Saqlain, watching the current matches between Pakistan and India is a painful experience for them.
Shoaib said, “The zeal and enthusiasm that we used to have while playing against India has now been lost. It is true that we have lost some matches but everyone expected a tough match.” Saqlain also recalled that whenever Pakistan played against India, captain Wasim Akram and other senior players used to inspire other players to persevere till the end.
He said, “I remember how we won that Test match against India in Chennai in 1999. Sachin (Tendulkar) was batting and as India was getting closer to victory, Wasim Bhai was constantly encouraging us that we just need Sachin’s wicket and we will win. This team doesn’t have that enthusiasm.
