60 years old tradition is going to be broken in Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman will not take oath in Bang Bhawan
After securing a big victory in the recently held general elections in Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman will be sworn in as the new Prime Minister of the country on Tuesday, February 17. The special thing about this swearing-in ceremony is that it will not be held at the traditional venue Banga Bhavan, but will be held at the South Plaza of the Parliament complex. This step is being considered different from the tradition that has been going on for the last six decades.
President will administer oath of office and secrecy
According to the report, President Mohammad Shahabuddin will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the Prime Minister and his cabinet members in the afternoon. According to the official information released by the Parliament Secretariat, the swearing-in program of the newly elected MPs will be held at 10 am in the South Plaza of the Parliament. After this, a new cabinet will be formed in the afternoon. At the same time, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called a meeting in Parliament House to select the leader of its parliamentary party. Senior party leader Salah Uddin Ahmed clarified that after being elected the leader of the parliamentary party, party president Tariq Rehman will assume the post of Prime Minister.
On this historic occasion, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will attend the ceremony as the official representative from India’s side. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Lok Sabha General Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh are also expected to accompany him. Bangladesh had also invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the event, but he would not be able to attend due to his prior schedule. On the same day, he has an important meeting scheduled with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai.
BNP wins 209 seats out of 297
According to Election Commission data, in the recent parliamentary elections, BNP won 209 out of 297 seats, giving it a clear majority. Apart from this, Jamaat-e-Islami got 68 seats. After the election results, Tariq Rehman met political rivals and congratulated them and gave the message of positive dialogue.
Tariq Rehman will become the Prime Minister of the country for the first time and he will replace Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government. Representatives from many countries are likely to attend his swearing-in ceremony, including senior officials from Maldives, Türkiye and Sri Lanka. New changes are expected from this new leadership in the internal politics of Bangladesh as well as in regional and international relations.
