Will AI destroy or create jobs? CEA Ananth Nageswaran’s warning, said – be careful in time; Otherwise…

N Nageswaran On AI: During the India AI Impact Summit 2026, India’s Chief Economic Advisor V Ananth Nageswaran has said an important thing regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). He said that instead of adopting AI casually, it should be implemented thoughtfully and with planning. It is especially important to link it with employment generation on a large scale. He warned in clear words that AI will impact India’s economic progress and social stability, hence it cannot be left to ‘chance’.

In a virtual address, he said that laxity in adopting AI cannot be tolerated. This is not the work of the government alone, but should be a collective effort as ‘Team India’. In this, the private sector, academicians and policy makers will all have to work together. He particularly emphasized strengthening basic education, developing high-quality skills, expanding labor-intensive service sectors, and reducing unnecessary regulations and barriers. He believes that only if skills and technology move forward together, the country will get real benefits.

Why immediate action is needed

Nageswaran also said that the window of opportunity is open now, but it will not remain open forever. Therefore it is important to take immediate action. According to him, this is not just a debate on future jobs, but a question of the future of India’s development and social balance. If there is correct forecasting, strong institutional discipline and consistent effective implementation, India can become the first major country in the world where humans and technology combine to exemplify widespread prosperity. He also drew attention to the current situation in the country. Lakhs of jobs are being created every year, but there remains a huge gap in the skills of the people. Very few people receive formal skills training.

He called it a ‘structural weakness’ which needs to be addressed soon. He says that this problem will not be solved on its own. This requires urgency, political will, strong administrative capacity and a clear commitment to adopt technology with employable skills on a large scale.
