India storm into Super 8 after 61-run thrashing of Pakistan
Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India scripted another dominant chapter in their rivalry with Pakistan registering a commanding 61-run win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group A clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
With the victory, India extended their T20 World Cup head-to-head record against Pakistan to 8-1 and sealed qualification for the Super 8 stage.
Kishan’s 77 sets the tone
Opener Ishan Kishan played a match-defining knock of 77 off 40 balls, blending authority with flair on a slightly two-paced surface. His innings powered India to 175/7 — a total that proved more than sufficient under the conditions.
Kishan controlled the middle overs with clean hitting and intelligent placement, ensuring India maintained momentum despite losing wickets towards the end.
Bowlers seal emphatic win
Pakistan’s chase faltered early as Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya struck crucial blows. The early dismissal of skipper Babar Azam further dented their hopes.
India’s disciplined bowling unit maintained pressure throughout, eventually bundling Pakistan out for 114 to complete a comprehensive triumph.
Wishes pour in
Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi congratulated Team India and praised head coach Gautam Gambhir for his “stewardship”. Gambhir responded graciously, thanking him for the wishes.
The emphatic result also made India the first team to register 10 consecutive wins in Men’s T20 World Cup history, underlining their consistency on the global stage.
With confidence high and momentum firmly on their side, Suryakumar Yadav’s men now look ahead to the Super 8 phase, carrying forward another memorable victory over their arch-rivals.
